I was reading an entry in BoingBoing about musicians campaigning for net neutrality. The campaign is dubbed as Rock the Net. The campaign supports the idea that all traffic in the Internet must be treated equally. According to them, there are some Internet providers that are charging fees to have some web sites load faster than the others. Phone and other cable companies reacted to this by saying that Net neutrality would harm investment and innovation in the Internet.

Hmmm, harm innovation in the Internet? Innovation in the Internet does not have something to do with priority web traffic. Giving priority web traffic is like a new money raking-in scheme. And thus, this is not all about innovation in the Internet. This is just about innovation in creating additional cost.

The founding bands are:

  • R.E.M.
  • Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam)
  • Ted Leo
  • Boots Riley
  • Death Cab for Cutie
  • OK Go
  • Bob Mould
  • Calexico
  • Kathleen Hanna
  • The Donnas
  • Jerry Harrison
  • John Doe
  • Les Claypool
  • Kronos Quartet
  • Jimmy Tamborello
  • Street to Nowhere
  • The Locust
  • Rogue Wave
  • Guster
  • State Radio
  • Matt Wertz
  • Griffin House
  • Matt Nathanson
  • The Wrens

Please do support this campaign and sign this petition. Anyway, they should have used the Petition Online website. It seems that their form does not really validate whether the one who signed is from US or not.

Some really good bands on the list, but I wonder if any of them actually understand the issues surrounding net neutrality? I do some work on net neutrality issues with www.handsoff.org and think that so-called net neutrality is a solution to a problem that simply doesn’t exist. These artists could put their energies to much better use addressing real issues like copyright reform.

I’d agree with HandsOff. And I thought this whole net neutrality issue died already.
